And now, the end is near…

Remember remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…

In 1605, a plot to assassinate King James the First was hatched by a motley crew of conspirators, who planned to replace the ruling monarch with a Catholic leader.

History shows that it was not successful. The authorities, getting wind that something was not quite right under the Houses of Parliament, descended on the seat of government on November 5th and arrested a man called Guido, or Guy, Fawkes. He was found in possession of a large number of barrels of gunpowder and, tellingly, a match.

He was sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered – an unpleasant means of death at the best of times. Happily for Fawkes, he decided suicide was a less painful option and he hung himself while in prison for his botched attempt at seventeenth century terrorism.

In the UK, the event is celebrated with fireworks, bonfires and the ceremonial burning of an image or effigy – used to be Guy, but it can be anyone you like (Margaret Thatcher was a popular choice, I hear rumours that this year Simon Cowell made it to the top of the burning pile of wood).

Why is this important, I hear you ask? Why should we care about arcane rituals celebrating the capture of a man who thought the best way to achieve change was through removing the guy at the top and replacing him with a more religious alternative?

Because tomorrow, the American people get to vote. November 6, 2012, could be a significant day in the history of the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

After what seems like centuries of political ads and campaigns that have cost an obscene amount of money, it all comes down to the voice of the people. Four more years of a bloke that hasn’t really lived up to the high (possibly unrealistic) expectations of 2008 or a man who still hasn’t really revealed his plan for fixing what he perceives to be wrong with America.

Which seems to be Obama and the rise of socialist/communist/maoist/marxist ideology that has allowed the government to dictate our lives and create a society of entitlement – an interesting perspective from a gentleman who was born with a number of silver eating utensils in his mouth.

The race is close, too close to call for many pundits. But the most important thing that anybody who is allowed to vote tomorrow can do is to get off their couch and walk into a polling station, put a cross/punch a hole next to the candidate that they believe will move the country forward and then wait for Fox News to announce that Romney has won. Even if he hasn’t.

Then we can all get back to actually trying to do something else for at least two years before the whole circus starts again.

Remember remember the sixth of November…it could be a big day.
